A ceramic artist for over 20 years, Romanda Newman specialises in creating porcelain art wares, both sculptural and functional.
“My current ceramic practice involves walking through my neighbourhood, seeking out local native plants, selecting just the right flowers to take home, and with great care and precision, pressing them into my slab of porcelain clay to preserve their pattern, and then forming the clay into thedesired shape. With every flower pressing it’s like I’m seeing our native flora for the first time, their unique patterns, shapes, curves, and colours. It fills me with awe.”
Romanda transforms the dense, rustic material of clay into something graceful, elegant, and seemingly weightless. Her porcelain structures appear to float across the wall, holding captive sprigs of native flora swaying in the breeze to a soulful melody. Quiet reminders of the beauty to be found all around us.
